I’m Amber McKenney and I’m the owner, cake designer, and cake whisperer at Sweet on Cake, a boutique-style custom cakery established in 2009. I believe there’s nothing better than a flawless, pristine cake that also tastes as amazing as it looks. I take great pride in my sweet, delicious craft, which is why I personally bake, design, and decorate all of the cakes that come through my bakery.

In my years BC (Before Cake), I was a UCLA grad pursuing a career in journalism, and I thought baking would always remain a hobby. But I couldn’t deny my true passion, so I went to the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco and landed a job at a renowned celebrity cake bakery, and my love for cakes grew. It was during my return to journalism (hey, I had to earn some seed money!) that I received a call from Food Network while sitting in my cubicle, asking me to compete on their popular cake competition show, Food Network Challenge. I felt this was a sign, so I quit my editing job and started Sweet on Cake and I’ve never looked back since!

But I couldn’t have done any of this without my trusty sidekick, Heather. If you couldn’t tell from the photos, Heather is my mom (can you see the resemblance?) and the Administrative Assistant at Sweet on Cake. Together we make a perfect team. While I’m working away in the bakery, Heather is busy answering the phone and sending emails to lovely clients like you. She is the first friendly voice you’ll encounter when placing your order or scheduling your wedding cake tasting. But her talents are not just limited to the office—she also creates all of the gorgeous handmade sugar flowers that adorn our wedding cakes. Go Mom! I think it’s pretty easy to see that creativity runs in the family.
